What we help with

Temporary residence applications

Each type of application has its own requirements and common pitfalls.

Study permits

A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and proof of funds are always required. Most students also need a provincial attestation letter.

Work permits

Employer-specific permits, often requiring a Labour Market Impact Assessment, and open work permits for eligible people.

Extensions and status

Extending your stay, changing your status inside Canada, or restoring status that has expired.

Estimated last day to file — Application for leave and judicial review: 15 days.

An estimate only. Exact rules on when the clock starts can vary. Contact a lawyer immediately rather than waiting until the last day.

Officers refuse many applications for reasons that could have been addressed in advance.

  • The officer is not satisfied you will leave Canada at the end of your stay
  • Not enough proof of funds
  • An unclear purpose of travel or study plan
  • Missing documents or inconsistent information

We build the application around the concerns officers raise most often.

You usually have two paths: reapply or challenge the decision.

  • Request the officer’s notes (GCMS notes) to see the real reasons
  • Reapply with evidence that addresses each concern
  • Or seek judicial review in the Federal Court within the deadline

See refusals, appeals and judicial review for more on challenging a decision.

Visit, study and work permit questions

The most common reason is that the officer was not satisfied you would leave Canada at the end of your visit, often because of limited ties to your home country, finances or travel history. The officer’s notes give the full reasons.

Most study permit applicants need one, along with a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and proof of funds. Your school can tell you how to get it.

A visa that lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents visit for long periods, with insurance and income requirements.

Yes, in many cases, but you should apply before your current status expires.

If the refusal was based on missing evidence, reapplying may be faster. If the officer made an error or ignored evidence, judicial review may be better. The deadline is 15 days for decisions made in Canada and 60 days outside.
