Canada Express Entry requirements

Express Entry is a great pathway to choose if you’re looking for permanent residence in Canada.

Understanding all of the Canada Express Entry requirements helps you determine whether you currently qualify and, if not, what you may need to do to improve your chances.

Express Entry Programs

Express Entry is an online system that manages three federal economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW): For applicants with foreign work experience and post-secondary education who meet a 67 out of 100 point selection grid.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For applicants with at least one year of recent Canadian skilled work experience.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST): Supports applicants in specific trades who meet work, language, and certification or job offer requirements.

Even before scoring under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), you must first qualify for at least one of these programs.

What Exactly Are The Requirements?

Several Canada Express Entry requirements appear in most applications:

  • Valid language test results in English or French.
  • Education credentials.
  • Recent work experience in National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER categories.
  • Proof of settlement funds for certain programs.
  • Admissibility on medical, criminal, and security grounds.

Once you meet program requirements, create your profile and enter the pool, and then you’ll be ranked against other candidates.

CRS Points

If you’re wondering how many points are required for Express Entry Canada, there is no single fixed number.

Instead, IRCC uses the CRS to rank candidates out of 1,200 points and sets a cut-off score for each draw.

Recent program and category-based draws have often required CRS scores in the high 400s or 500s, depending on the round.

CRS categories look like this:

CRS Factor CategoryMaximum Points (Single Applicant)
Core / Human Capital500
Skill Transferability100
Additional Factors600
Total Possible CRS1,200

Your actual target score will depend on current draw trends and whether you qualify for category-based or Provincial Nominee draws.
