Receiving a letter from IRCC can be really overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure if it’s just a normal update or something more serious that needs your attention.
To start, just read the letter thoroughly, make a note of the deadline, and figure out what IRCC needs you to do next. They might be asking you to respond, upload certain Canada immigration documents, attend an appointment, or simply keep the letter for later use.
IRCC sends different types of letters at different stages, including requests for biometrics, medical exams, extra documents, refusal decisions, and port of entry letters after approval.
IRCC Letters and Required Canada Immigration Documents
The most important thing is to treat each letter based on what it actually says, not what you hope it means.
IRCC also says refusal letters now include officer decision notes for certain application types, including some visitor, study, work permit, and extension applications.
| Letter Type | What to Do Next |
| Request for additional information or documents | Gather exactly what was requested, check the deadline, and upload or submit it in the format IRCC asks for. If documents are not in English or French, they may need a certified translation. |
| Biometrics instruction letter | Book and complete biometrics within the time allowed. Generally, this is up to 30 days from the date on the letter. |
| Medical exam request | Follow the instructions in the letter and complete the medical exam as directed. IRCC says not to do a new exam unless instructed. |
| Procedural fairness letter | Respond to the concerns raised. These letters are sent when concerns exist or persist, giving the applicant a chance to respond before a final decision. |
| Refusal letter | Read the reasons closely and review any officer decision notes included. The next step may be reapplying, addressing missing evidence, or getting legal advice about possible review or appeal. |
| Port of entry letter of introduction | Keep it safe. IRCC says this letter is not your study or work permit, and you must show it to the officer when you arrive in Canada. |
